On Thursday, June 25, iNACOL hosted a Special Edition Webinar featuring Susan Patrick, President and CEO of iNACOL, and Chris Sturgis, Principal of MetisNet, as they discussed the recent CompetencyWorks report titled, Implementing Competency Education in K-12 Systems: Insights from Local Leaders.

Over the past five years, Chris visited competency-based schools and districts throughout the country and engaged in powerfully insightful conversations in which leading innovators provided insights to opportunities and challenges encountered in the transition to competency education.

This paper seeks to map out district implementation strategies being used to convert traditional, time-based systems of education into personalized, competency-based learning infrastructures. The report proposes four stages of implementation:

  1. Ramping Up for Transformation
  2. Designing the Infrastructure for Learning
  3. Transitioning to a Competency-Based System
  4. Embracing Continuous Improvement and Innovation

In this webinar, the presenters explored the limitations of the traditional time-based system, highlighted opportunities and challenges in the transition toward competency education, and provided targeted information for leaders and educators in various stages of implementation.
