Levers and Logic Models: A Framework to Guide Research and Design of High-Quality K-12 Competency-Based Education Systems

Competency-based education is gaining momentum and visibility nationally. To advance the field with quality and fidelity, CompetencyWorks developed a logic model defining key elements and levers of high-quality competency-based systems to accelerate research and advance the implementation of high-quality models.

In a recent report titled, Levers and Logic Models: A Framework to Guide Research and Design of High-Quality Competency-Based Education Systems, authors Chris Sturgis and Katherine Casey share a logic model of a fully developed competency-based education system. They will share details of the logic model and paper in an iNACOL Leadership Webinar on June 19, 2018.

The logic model draws upon multiple bodies of research literature and input from local and national voices working in the field of competency education. It describes common elements of practice necessary for quality implementation and continuous improvement. The paper bridges the research and practice divide, giving researchers and practitioners a common language and framework to connect what teachers and education leaders do with the most emergent knowledge about human learning and development. The logic models presented within the report are intended to help the field understand the critical components of competency-based education at multiple levels of practice.

Districts and schools turn to this competency-based learning model for different reasons, using different entry points and roll-out strategies to ensure students develop mastery. In addition, systems are in different stages of development of competency education within local contexts. As a result, there is wide variation in what competency-based education looks like across the country.

Join this webinar for an in-depth exploration of the report and to understand the elements that create a high-quality competency-based education system.
